2nd Commandment

I'm excited that you have joined me today!

I pray that you realize you are blessed and secure in Him.

Here we go, the 2nd commandment.

Exodus 20:4-6
(4) You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water below. (5) You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me (6) but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Whew! That's a mouth full. There is so much in those few verses. I tend to gravitate towards verse 6. I want a thousand generations from me to be blessed. But that's not the verse we will look at. :)

Let us take a look at verse 4.

You shall not make yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water below. (emphasis mine)

I looked around my house and realized that I have things that could become idols. I have various plaques about God. I also have a cross standing on my entertainment center. I have scriptures taped to my mirrors, windows and doors. If I am not careful I could begin to worship, in a sense, those things instead of what they represent. I could become so enchanted by they way they look or how people respond to them that I forget it's all about God. I do believe we should have things in our home that is Christ centered. But again, it's about the heart attitude. Where does our attitude line up with this? Are we like the Israelites who would rather make and idolize a cow because it was something they could see? I pray not! Having crosses, angels, plaques, and so on doesn't make our home Christian. It doesn't make our home safe from the enemy. Those things should only be a reminder to ourselves and those who enter that we do belong to The King.

God is faithful with His Word. It is so important that we understand Him. That we know where He is coming from. It's not just about us. There are future generations at stake.
